An "industry" is all of the companies and jobs that do something similar. Some examples of industries are:

• the legal industry
• the film industry
• the auto industry

If someone works in the same industry as you or the person you're speaking to, you can say that they're "in the industry":

People who aren't in the industry just don't understand how much work goes into it!
