“So what's the story?”
You and your friend were supposed to meet someone at 8:00 for dinner, but she's 20 minutes late. Your friend called her and they talked for a few minutes. You ask this because you want to know what they said.
“Just tell me the truth.”
You find out that the disk tray of your DVD player is broken. You suspect that your 6-year-old son broke it. You ask him if he broke it, and he doesn't answer but looks guilty. You say this to encourage him to confess.
“We were able to raise just under fifteen thousand dollars.”
You were in charge of planning an event to raise money for a charity. Now the event is over, and you're talking to a friend about how it went. You're telling him about the amount of money you made.
“He claims he didn't do it, but I strongly suspect that he did.”
The disk tray of your DVD player is broken. You think that your son broke it, but he says that he didn't. Now you're telling your wife about it.
“You can substitute plain yogurt for the sour cream if you want to make it lower-fat.”
You're at a potluck lunch. Someone asks you about the dish that you made, so you're telling her about the recipe. You're talking about different options for the recipe, and you say this.
